After we met Uber’s situation this week, there is now another one, also with a big impact. In the well-known Imgur image publishing service, data were stolen from 1.7 million users. It was Imgur itself who came to the public in its blog to warn of this situation. According to the company, this robbery will have happened in 2014, but only now they have been alerted to the situation. In total, data from 1.7 million user accounts have been stolen, without any trace being left of that attack. The data, which is known to have been taken from Imgur’s servers, does not include any personal information of the users, being “only” the addresses of email accounts and their keywords. According to Imgur, the robbery should only have been possible because, at the time, a weak security cipher algorithm was used and it was broken by brute force.

The recommendation made to the users of the service goes in the direction of these update their passwords and try not to use these in other services where they present with the same email addresses.
